The opportunity:

As an Associate Underwriter in our Cyber, Tech and FinTech team based in Toronto, you will work closely with the AVP of Cyber and a dynamic team to help implement underwriting strategies, improve processes & products, and build strong broker relationships across Canada. Your role will involve underwriting new business and renewals in a profitable manner and according to authority level and established guidelines, and participate in special projects, designed to keep the team at the forefront of our customers that will have a true impact on our business. You will utilise underwriting tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges. Understand relevant  laws and regulation to properly transact business within Canada and other relevant territories. Be knowledgeable in coverage forms and policy language; appropriately applying coverage and exclusions. Assist with underwriting administrative tasks and work closely with assigned agents/brokers.

About the team:

The TCF team is comprised of Technology, Cyber and Fintech lines, which sits within the Professional & Financial Risks division of  Markel Canada. The  team  will predominantly underwrite  Cyber and Technology E&O, but will also handle Management  Liability  and Crime as part of Markel’s Fintech offering. We have a flexible and  innovative  approach  to  underwriting  that  ensures  that  we  can  provide  continually evolving specialist products required by our customers.

What you'll be doing:

• Work with AVP Cyber, wider team, actuarial, and other parts of the business to implement the underwriting strategy on new and renewal business and monitor progress and developments
• Champion continuous improvements and work with the to improve end-to-end underwriting administrative tasks,  processes and data
• Confidently and positively demonstrate the field of our chosen underwriting approach
• Positively contribute towards the team’s underwriting strategy
• Attend regular broker and clients meeting and travel to represent Markel as required by the AVP Cyber
• Develop strong relationships with existing and new brokers.
• Apply appropriate underwriting practices including authority and guidelines control.
• Apply appropriate risk management practices including aggregations and guideline controls and any measures required to limit Markel’s exposure

What we're looking for :

• Have a detailed understanding of the insurance market
• 2-3 years of Cyber, Tech E&O or Fintech insurance experience preferred; or similar relevant technology or cyber security experience
• Natural curiosity, a lifelong learner and innovative thinker
• Demonstrate strong numerical and analytical ability
• Excellent IT skills including Microsoft Word and Excel
• Demonstrated ability to build rapport easily and excellent communication skills
• Up to 25% travel (when appropriate)
• Bilingual preferred
