About the role
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled 3rd Line Network Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for managing, supporting, and optimizing complex network infrastructure for our managed service customers. You will work closely with the 1st and 2nd line support teams, as well as collaborate with other IT departments, to ensure that the network infrastructure is reliable, scalable, and secure. The role demands advanced problem-solving skills, a deep understanding of networking technologies, and the ability to handle escalations from junior teams.
As a 3rd Line Network Engineer, you will:
Design, configure, and maintain the organization's network infrastructure, ensuring it is secure, highly available, and scalable. This includes LAN, WAN, VPN, and cloud networking
Provide expert-level support for complex network issues escalated from the 1st and 2nd line teams, diagnose root causes, and implement solutions to restore services quickly with minimal downtime
Continuously monitor and improve the performance of the network infrastructure by identifying areas for optimisation and implementing best practices
Ensure the network is secured against threats by implementing and maintaining firewalls, VPNs, intrusion detection/prevention systems, and ensuring adherence to security best practices
Lead or contribute to network-related changes, such as network upgrades, migrations, and integrations. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders
Create and maintain detailed documentation related to network configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting guides. Provide regular reports on network performance, incidents, and changes
Work with other IT teams internal or external to ensure a seamless and cohesive IT environment. Share knowledge and best practices with junior engineers
Engage with vendors for support, service contracts, and product procurement, ensuring that service levels and SLAs are met for example Cisco
About you
To set you up for success, we are looking for the following skills and experience:
In-depth knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, HTTP/S, FTP, and other common network protocols
Extensive experience with IP addressing (IPv4 & IPv6) and subnetting
Strong experience with routing protocols (e.g., OSPF, BGP, EIGRP)
Proficiency with Cisco, Juniper, or Fortinet routing and switching hardware
Configuration and management of VLANs, VTP, STP, and spanning tree protocol
Strong understanding of firewall configuration and management (e.g., Cisco ASA, Fortinet)
Experience with VPN technologies (e.g., IPsec, SSL, MPLS)
Familiarity with intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS)
Proficient in using network monitoring tools (e.g., Logic Monitor)
Experience with SNMP, Syslog, and network performance tuning
Strong experience in managing and troubleshooting wireless LANs (Wi-Fi) using tools like Cisco Meraki or Aruba Networks
Knowledge of cloud networking in AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud environments
Experience with hybrid cloud network integration
Expertise in advanced troubleshooting methodologies and tools for diagnosing complex network issues
Experience with packet capture analysis, network flow analysis, and latency diagnostics
Proficiency with network automation tools (e.g., Ansible, Python) for task automation and configuration management
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent work experience
Minimum of 5 years of experience working in network engineering roles, with at least 2 years in a 3rd-line support or senior networking position
Strong experience in designing, managing, and troubleshooting complex networks across various technologies and platforms
Fortinet and Juniper experience and knowledge is highly desirable
Certifications Needed:
CCNP/CCIE (Cisco Certified Network Professional/Expert), JNCIP (Juniper Networks Certified Internet Professional), Fortinet NSE Level or equivalent advanced networking certifications
CompTIA Network+, Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) for security knowledge
