Security Engineer II

The Security Engineer II assists with the implementation, installation, deployment, and operations of compute, storage, and cloud infrastructure services in support of Middlebury College's business and academic operations. The Security Engineer II supports the security operations team with information security operations, vulnerability and patch management, incident detection, threat hunting, incident response, and recovery from cybersecurity incidents. 

This is a full time, benefits eligible, salaried position with a hiring range of $63,009 - $78,787 per year.

Core Responsibilities:

• Build, deploy, operate, administer and maintain on-premises and cloud systems and services 
• Support systems asset lifecycle management, from receiving, to configuration, testing, staging, deployment, operations, and decommissioning and disposal of equipment. 
• Diagnose and troubleshoot complex technology issues involving systems services, serving as escalation point for team and community members troubleshooting infrastructure issues. 

• Monitor for and respond to security incidents on Middlebury's managed infrastructure and cloud services, including email. 

• Follow information security news and trends, track known software vulnerabilities, and apply mitigating controls as necessary, including software updates and security patches to systems infrastructure 

• Inventory managed IT assets and document IT asset management solutions 

• Collaborate with ITS colleagues and consult with clients across the community about technology challenges and opportunities 
• Participate in the ITS Infrastructure Services On-Call rotation; flexible hours are required to accommodate maintenance windows and/or address unplanned outages. 

Requirements

• Experience with mobile device management, software packaging and distribution, endpoint security, vulnerability and patch management solutions. 
• Experience with Windows and Apple system administration, including setup, printing, patch management, security, performance tuning and optimization, and troubleshooting. 
• Experience with Microsoft Active Directory, Azure Active Directory, Exchange Online, Microsoft Sentinel, Microsoft 365, Microsoft 365 Defender, and Google Workspace. 
• Experience with email security tools including Microsoft 365 Defender, endpoint security tools like Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, information security incident detection and response capabilities, plus the ability to handle sensitive situations with appropriate discretion.  
• Experience working with Managed Detection and Response service providers. 
• Preferred: experience with InTune/Mobile Device Management, Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager, Microsoft Defender, and other endpoint management and security tools. 
• Preferred: experience with Zoom Video and Zoom Phone. 
• Hybrid/Remote work is possible, but the position entails visiting campus frequently to perform hands-on work on infrastructure, including occasional emergency visits to address critical infrastructure failures; living within a 1-hour commutable distance or less is highly recommended. 
• 2 or more years of experience in the successful delivery of enterprise IT scale systems and services. 

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

Occasional data center related activities such as racking switches, routers, firewalls, servers, etc., as well as accessing network closets. Shipping and receiving computers, servers, network hardware, etc.
