The mission of the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, as a regulatory State agency, is to establish and enforce standards to ensure that the people of Texas are served by highly trained and ethical law enforcement, corrections, and telecommunications personnel.
Our IT Division
The cybersecurity team within the TCOLE IT Division serves as the digital guardian of Texas law enforcement training, compliance, and records systems. Our team is dedicated to protecting critical infrastructure, safeguarding sensitive data, and ensuring the integrity of the systems that support the agency. We defend against evolving cyber threats while maintaining the accessibility and reliability that Texas law enforcement agencies depend on.
Who We’re Looking For
The Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) is seeking Cybersecurity Analyst I to join the Enforcement Division located at 6330 E HWY 290, Suite 200, Austin, TX.
The Cybersecurity Analyst I performs moderately complex (journey-level) information security and cybersecurity analysis work involving planning, implementing, and monitoring security measures for the protection of information systems and infrastructure within a regulatory law enforcement environment. Responsibilities include cybersecurity incident detection, analysis, and response; vulnerability assessments; forensic analysis; and ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations. This position works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment
Salary is dependent on qualifications and experience. The salary range is $61,184 - $75,000. The Job Class for this position is 0319 and salary group is B23.
Monitors and analyzes cybersecurity alerts from cybersecurity tools, network devices, and information systems to detect potential threats and security incidents.
Performs cybersecurity incident detection, analysis, prevention, and response activities, including documentation of security incidents and reporting to agency management and external regulatory agencies as required.
Conducts vulnerability scans and assessments of networks, applications, and systems to evaluate effectiveness and identify security weaknesses, recommending appropriate mitigation strategies.
Conducts technical risk assessments and reviews of account permissions, computer data access needs, security violations, programming changes, and new and existing applications and systems.
Monitors systems and procedures to protect data systems and databases from unauthorized access.
Supports agency's security and privacy awareness training program by assisting in the development, implementation, and delivery and administration for agency staff.
Supports the implementation and maintenance of computer system security plans, policies, and procedures in collaboration with agency personnel and external vendors.
Develops and maintains plans to safeguard computer configuration and data files.
Analyzes and interprets security data and reports to identify trends, patterns, and potential security risks.
Maintains current knowledge of cybersecurity threats, trends, and emerging technologies.
Prepares technical reports, documentation, and briefings on cybersecurity incidents, assessments, and recommendations for management review.

Qualifications
Qualifications
Required Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or a related field.
- At least two (2) years of professional experience in cybersecurity, information security, or a related technical role.
- Education and experience may substitute for each other on a year-for-year basis.
- One (1) or more of the following certifications: CompTIA Security+, Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), GIAC Security Essentials (GSEC), or similar industry-recognized cybersecurity certifications.
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
- Basic understanding of information security principles and practices.
- Familiarity with security tools and technologies, including but not limited to Texas Cybersecurity Framework, NIST frameworks (NIST 800-53, NIST Cybersecurity Framework), Microsoft security solutions (Entra, Intune, Purview)
- Knowledge of TCP/IP protocols, networking technologies, and cybersecurity principles, including security controls, regulations, incident response practices, and IT infrastructure security.
- Knowledge of security risks, mitigation strategies, and protective measures for networks, operating systems, communication protocols, and software applications.
- Skill in cybersecurity software for configuring, deploying, monitoring, and automating security applications; ability to analyze and interpret security data and reports.
- Ability to resolve complex security issues in diverse environments, develop and maintain security processes, and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to present technical subjects to various audiences, with attention to detail, confidentiality, and analytical thinking.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and shifting priorities.
Preferred Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of state and federal information security regulations specific to law enforcement environments; familiarity with highly regulated information systems requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to devise innovative security solutions and strategies to address unique requirements in law enforcement and regulatory environments.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Two (2) or more years of experience implementing, using, or governing cybersecurity frameworks such as NIST Cybersecurity Framework or ISO 27000 series.
- Previous State of Texas experience.
- Experience working in a law enforcement or regulatory environment.
- Experience performing computer and network forensic analysis; experience using contemporary tools and technologies for vulnerability scanning, remote system administration, network monitoring and protection, security notification, and risk assessment.
- Certifications from Cisco, Microsoft, or AWS.
