As a Security Assurance Engineer you will have opportunities to collaborate across departments and with customers to streamline compliance processes and secure onboarding of services, fostering a culture of security and compliance excellence. Responsibilities
Security Issues Analysis
- Analyzes complex issues using multiple data sources to identify security problems. Creates new solutions to mitigate security issues. Makes tradeoffs to balance security and operational needs. Helps to drive resolution to systemic security issues. Provides insights on security designs (e.g., design reviews, threat models). Understands overall feature architecture and aligns security analysis to it. Understands scope of problems and how they can affect down-level platforms. Identifies less common types of security issues, defects, or threats, in a product. Identifies and remedies security issues by collaborating with one or more feature teams. Evaluates products against security baselines (e.g., gap analysis) by comparing and contrasting features in a product and initial features of the baseline.
Solution Engineering and Mitigation
- Identifies, prioritizes, and targets complex security issues that cause negative impact to customers. Creates and drives adoption of relevant mitigations. Suggests and drives appropriate response and remediation for issues. Develops guidelines and best practices to enable teams to avoid common patterns of issues.
Subject Matter Expertise
- Uses subject matter expertise to identify potential security issues, tools, mitigations, and processes (e.g., architecture, failure modes, attack chain, threat modeling, vulnerabilities). Stays current in knowledge and expertise as security landscape evolves. Makes expertise available to others through sharing, coaching, conferences, and other means.
Customer/Partner Results
- Helps to make connections and assist in developing agreements between groups to clarify priorities and identify dependencies. Engages with customers and partners to improve security issues. Analyzes security issues or patterns. Uses knowledge of security in developing analytical tools. Advocates for customers and partners. Develops feedback channels and translates feedback into better security practices. Escalates issues as needed.
Security Reviews and Reporting
- Leads large-scale security reviews. Leads work on architectural and design security reviews for feature areas. Where appropriate, ensures best practices for security architecture, design and development are in place. Measures return on investment (ROI). Determines value of investment. Measures customer satisfaction. Evaluates security risks and their impact to the affected services and works with Development Operation leads, engineering leads and researchers to mitigate risks. Monitors and responds to security events, potential vulnerabilities, exposures, and policy compliance issues.
Planning and Research
- Takes product schedules, dependencies and risk assessments into consideration in performing security design and analysis. Creates a schedule for analysis of large feature areas that accounts for dependencies and meets milestones. Creates schedule for a security analysis that involves several stakeholders and that optimizes their time and effort. Conducts security research of Microsoft and competitor products. Researches, analyzes, and summarizes security threats and shares with Security Assurance and security tooling teams as enhancements to security compliance program.
Additional Responsibilites
- You’ll be responsible for maintaining the compliance Body of Evidence (BoE)for three network system boundaries. Each BoE is minimally comprised of The BoE is inclusive of: SSP control narratives, associated test plans, SCTM, RBAC matrices, any/all applicable GUGs, PUGs, SOPs (e.g., CM plan, CCB constructs, IR procedures, Azure policy / templates, priv escalation, break glass accts, etc.
- You’ll engage in various Authorization & Assessment / Joint Test Team (JTT) support for the following efforts (minimally): M365 A&A for supporting Teams integration and ABAC enhancements in PLx; PL3 file shares in PLx: CSfC for PLx. This includes coordination with the site, customer reps, engineering, etc.
- Ensuring the Body of Evidence (BoE) is ready for presentation to the USG assessors. The BoE shall minimally consist of test plans for each control / control family, the System Security Plan (SSP), Plan of Actions & Milestones (POA&M), and Security Control Requirements Matrix (SCTM). The exact composition of required JTT artifacts will be determined by the respective service & agency AOs. JTT support could also include reservation of facilities / rooms / associated logistics (e.g. visitor requests, coordination with facility security personnel, etc)
- Using your subject matter expertise, you’ll identify potential security issues, tools, mitigations, and processes. You’ll make this expertise available to others through sharing, coaching, conferences, and other means.
- You’ll engage with customers and partners to improve security issues by developing analytical tools and studying security patterns. You’ll also develop feedback channels in order to improve security practices.
- You’ll lead large-scale security reviews, including work on architectural and design reviews for feature areas. Where appropriate, you’ll also ensure best practices for security architecture, design, and development are in place.
- You’ll schedule the security analysis of large feature areas, accounting for dependencies and risk assessments, and involving multiple stakeholders. You’ll also analyze security threats and share summaries with security tooling teams to enhance compliance programs, while conducting security research of Microsoft and competitor products.

Required/Minimum Qualifications
- 5+ years experience in software development lifecycle, large scale computing, modeling, cyber security, anomaly detection
- OR Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Risk Management, Cyber Security, or related field
- OR equivalent experience.
Other Requirements
Security Clearance Requirements: Candidates must be able to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- The successful candidate must have an active U.S. Government Top Secret Clearance with access to Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) based on a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) with Polygraph. Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. Failure to maintain or obtain the appropriate U.S. Government clearance and/or customer screening requirements may result in employment action up to and including termination.
- Clearance Verification: This position requires successful verification of the stated security clearance to meet federal government customer requirements. You will be asked to provide clearance verification information prior to an offer of employment.
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
- Citizenship & Citizenship Verification: This position requires verification of U.S. citizenship due to citizenship-based legal restrictions. Specifically, this position supports United States federal, state, and/or local United States government agency customer and is subject to certain citizenship-based restrictions where required or permitted by applicable law. To meet this legal requirement, citizenship will be verified via a valid passport, or other approved documents, or verified US government Clearance
Preferred/Additional Qualifications
- 6+ years experience in software development lifecycle, large scale computing, modeling, cyber security, anomaly detection
- OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Risk Management, Cyber Security, or related field
- OR equivalent experience.
- Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) Certification, Security+ Certification, or relevant certification.
Security Assurance IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
