A security administrator is a hands-on practitioner and representative of the cybersecurity team. The role is technical, and candidates must possess a solid understanding of information security fundamentals and preferably have held positions in cybersecurity and systems administration. The role also requires an understanding of business and governance processes. Security administrators are responsible for protecting the organization's sensitive data and computer systems from cyber threats, vulnerabilities, and breaches by identifying and mitigating risks. They monitor networks for suspicious activity, investigate security incidents, create and maintain strong security polices, and recommend solutions for improving security posture. They must understand applications, operating systems, networking, cloud infrastructure and basic attacker tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs). Additionally, analysts are expected to maintain a high level of rigor to stay up-to-date with advancements in technology, while also retaining knowledge of older systems and applications in use.

* We are seeking a Security Infrastructure team to join our team. This role is open to candidates with a range of experience levels. The final level (System Administrator or Senior System Administrator) will be determined based on qualifications, skills, and experience.

** This position is eligible to work hybrid (9 or more days a month onsite) in accordance with our Telecommuting Policy. Applicants must reside in Kansas or Missouri or be willing to relocate as a condition of employment.

Compensation

$92,000 - $126,000

  • Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas offers excellent competitive compensation with the goal of retaining and growing talented team members. The salary range for this role is a good faith estimate, it is estimated based on what a successful candidate might be paid.  All offers presented to candidates are carefully reviewed to ensure fair, equitable pay by offering competitive salaries that align with the individual's skills, education, experience, and training. The range may vary above or below the stated amounts.

What you’ll do

  • Communicate directly with all areas of the company regarding vulnerabilities and risk, security best practices, and recommend and implement secure policies and solutions.
  • Administer and maintain enterprise firewalls, CDR solutions and other security tools as needed
  • Participate in monthly patch management and CIRT meetings.
  • Research security technologies and evaluate tools to grow the security program
  • Provides cybersecurity recommendations to leadership based on significant threats and vulnerabilities. 
  • Work closely with infrastructure teams to advise and support remediation efforts to close vulnerability exposure to new threats in the wild and verify the organization’s security posture against them.
  • Document, prioritize and formally report asset and vulnerability state, along with remediation recommendations and validation.
  • Implement system security measures in accordance with established procedures to ensure confidentiality, integrity, availability, authentication, and non-repudiation.
  • Perform Project Management Practices (PMP) processes required for projects and activities that are medium to large-sized in complexity.
  • Participate in yearly tabletop exercises

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of security technologies including firewalls (network and WAF), vulnerability scanners, VPNs, cloud detection and response, and third-party risk tools.
  • Expertise in information security standards and frameworks such as NIST SP 800 Series, ISO 27000, CIS Benchmarks, and HITRUST.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare security and privacy regulations, including HIPAA, and knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local compliance requirements.
  • Proficient in networking and protocols, with hands-on experience across Linux, Windows, and cloud environments.
  • Solid grasp of threat intelligence, incident response principles, and digital forensics, including chain of custody.
  • Experienced with application security, cloud platforms, and third-party risk management practices.
  • Relevant security certifications preferred, such as CISSP, OSCP, CISM, GIAC (e.g., GCIA, GPEN), Security+, or CEH.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to resolve complex issues using creative and best-practice approaches.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and customer service skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Proven ability to prioritize tasks, respond within SLAs, and maintain composure and sound judgment in high-pressure environments.

What you need

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, engineering or related technical field preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in supporting security processes/systems
