Our passion drives us to leverage digital innovation and technology to revolutionise the water industry. Join us in shaping our digital future, making a lasting impact, and transforming our teams. And it's why we need people like YOU. Come and shape our future with us and make a real and lasting impact across our teams.

Your opportunity:

Our rapidly growing Digital & Information Group is expanding, and we are seeking a highly experienced Specialist OT (Operational Technology) Engineer to join our newly established Operational Technology Applications team and provide hands-on technical authority, strategic leadership, and mentorship across the OT team.

The Digital & Information group is responsible for digitally enabling Urban Utilities today while transforming our future capabilities to enhance digital services for our customers, community, and people. We drive Urban Utilities’ digital & data strategy, oversee the digital portfolio, and manage IT, OT, data, IoT, security, infrastructure, system administration, network operations, and support services.

Reporting to the Lead, the Senior OT Engineer will lead the design, implementation, and evolution of our enterprise-scale Operational Technology (OT) systems. This role is pivotal in driving digital transformation across our industrial environments, integrating cutting-edge SCADA, IIoT, and cybersecurity technologies to ensure resilient, secure, and future-ready operations.

As a technical leader, you will architect robust OT infrastructures, guide strategic initiatives, and mentor a team of talented engineers. You will work closely with IT, cybersecurity, and executive leadership to align OT capabilities with business goals and regulatory requirements. This role is contributing to the success of Urban Utilities by supporting innovation, improving reliability, and promoting sustainable practices across diverse projects, thereby enhancing the quality and efficiency of services provided to the community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect and manage enterprise-scale OT systems with high-availability SCADA and resilient communications.

  • Lead integration of SCADA, historians, IIoT, edge computing, and analytics platforms.

  • Design OT-to-IT data pipelines and hybrid/cloud architectures aligned with business goals.

  • Implement backup and disaster recovery strategies using Octoplant, Veeam, and best practices.

  • Drive OT cybersecurity initiatives aligned with IEC 62443, NIST, and SOCI standards.

  • Design secure OT networks using Zero Trust, VLAN segmentation, and protocol-aware zoning.

  • Lead incident response, forensic analysis, and system hardening efforts.

  • Provide expert support across SCADA, networks, historians, and OT infrastructure.

  • Mentor engineering teams and set technical direction.

  • Advise leadership on OT strategy, risk, ROI, and emerging technologies.

  • Define technical standards and guide tool/vendor selection

About you:

  • Education & Certifications: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.

  • Experience: 7+ years of experience in OT/SCADA engineering, with a strong background in industrial automation and control systems

  • Technical Skills:

    • Proven experience designing and implementing enterprise-scale OT architectures.

    • Deep knowledge of SCADA systems, IIoT, edge computing, and industrial data platforms.

    • Strong understanding of OT cybersecurity frameworks (IEC 62443, NIST, SOCI).

    • Hands-on experience with OT backup and recovery tools (e.g., Octoplant, Veeam).

    • Expertise in OT networking, including VLANs, firewalls, and Zero Trust architectures.

  • Soft Skills:

    • Ability to collaborate across cross-functional teams and support IT and OT operations.

    • Customer-focused with a strategic and curious mindset.

    • Excellent communication skills and ability to influence stakeholders at all levels

    • Committed to integrity, authenticity, continuous learning, and inclusive teamwork.

    • Demonstrated leadership in technical teams and mentoring engineers

    • Agile and adaptable, embracing change and new challenges

    • Strong planning and decision-making skills to drive safe and effective outcomes

  • Desirable:

    • Certifications in cybersecurity (e.g., CISSP, GICSP), networking (e.g., CCNP), or OT systems.

    • Experience with cloud integration and hybrid OT/IT environments.

    • Familiarity with regulatory compliance in critical infrastructure sectors.

  • Other Requirements:

    • Security clearance or SOCI compliance may be required based on role scope.

Performance of ‘on call’ duties are an inherent requirement of this role. This requires that the employee must be available to be on-call and to attend to work matters, both in person and remotely, outside of normal working hours, including evenings, weekends and public holidays, as reasonably required to fulfill the requirements of the position. The days, times, duration and frequency of on call arrangements may be subject to change, including at short notice, as required by Urban Utilities’ operational needs as applying from time to time. At all times whilst on-call, you must be fit for duty, contactable, and able to respond, including the ability to physically attend if required, to the operational needs of the business within a reasonable timeframe and in a safe manner.

The requirement to undertake ‘on call duties’ arises from the critical nature of the role including key responsibilities for ensuring the continuity of essential water and wastewater services on a 24 hour 7 days per week basis to customers and the community across Urban Utilities’ geographic area in performing functions as a distributor-retailer under the South-East Queensland Water (Distribution and Retail Restructuring Act 2009 (Qld). The remuneration for the role has been calculated to include compensation for the requirement to remain available to perform work during on call periods and for the performance of work outside the ordinary hours of work as part of on call processes and otherwise. In some instances, additional compensation and remuneration may apply.
