What you will do

Amgen is seeking a Specialist IS Security Engineer who will report to the Senior Manager Global AI Security leader in our Cybersecurity and Digital Trust (CDT) organization and will be based in Lisbon Portugal, at Amgen’s Capability Center. This state-of-the art center serves as a base for finance, information systems, and human resources professionals to make a meaningful impact at one of the world’s leading biotechnology companies.

This position will join our cybersecurity team in securing the artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) systems that power innovation in Amgen. This role is essential in protecting sensitive biomedical data, safeguarding research models, and ensuring the trustworthiness of AI tools used in drug discovery, clinical development, and digital health.

The Security Engineer will work closely with cybersecurity architects, data scientists, bioinformaticians, and DevOps engineers to ensure our AI systems are designed, deployed, and maintained securely across cloud and on-prem environments. This is a senior technical role with influence across engineering, data science, and cybersecurity domains, will play a critical role in securing sensitive biomedical data, protecting proprietary models, and embedding resilience and compliance into our AI systems used in drug discovery, genomics, and digital health.

What we expect of you

Job Responsibilities:

  • Desing and implement secure-by-design AI/ML environments across cloud and on-premise platforms, ensuring robust access controls, encryption, and network segmentation.

  • Develop scripts and automation (Python, Bash) to implement security controls, monitor model integrity, and integrate vulnerability scanning and anomaly detection into AI workflows.

  • Conduct deep technical threat modeling and risk assessments focused on adversarial ML, data leakage, model manipulation, and supply chain vulnerabilities.

  • Support secure MLOPs development by building and maintaining secure MLOps frameworks (e.g., with Kubeflow, MLflow, or SageMaker) that support model reproducibility, traceability, and secure deployment.

  • Assist in securely implementing AI systems that comply with biotech and healthcare regulations including HIPAA, GDPR, 21 CFR Part 11, and GxP.

  • Develop and maintain security tooling and automation scripts to enhance visibility, vulnerability management, and model monitoring.

  • Perform security assessments and harden AI platforms, APIs, data repositories, and model endpoints.

  • Support engineering and implementation of tools for model explainability, bias detection, and auditability to meet regulatory and ethical AI requirements.

  • Help secure infrastructure and AI workloads in cloud platforms (AWS SageMaker, Terraform, Hashicorp, etc..) by managing IAM, encryption, and monitoring controls.

  • Partner with data science, R&D, and bioinformatics teams to ensure security is integrated into every stage of the AI lifecycle.

  • Participate in incident response efforts involving AI models or data pipelines, conducting root cause analysis and implementing remediation.

  • Continuously research emerging threats, tools, and best practices in AI security—particularly those relevant to biotech applications.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and 6 years of Information Security or Information Technology experience

  • Or

  • Associate's degree and 8 years of Information Security or Information Technology experience

  • Or

  • High school diploma / GED and 10 years of Information Security or Information Technology experience
     

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3-5+ years of experience designing, developing, or managing machine learning systems, with a strong understanding of AI pipelines.

  • Experience with secure MLOps and MLOPS lifecycle security tools (e.g., MLflow, Kubeflow, Whylabs)

  • Strong understanding of common software and web application security vulnerabilities. including OWASP top 10, SANS/CWE Top 25 etc

  • Hands-on experience implementing security for AI/ML systems used in clinical research, genomics, drug discovery, diagnostics, or digital health.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of adversarial machine learning techniques and defenses, including model evasion, poisoning, or inversion.

  • Understanding of HIPAA, 21 CFR Part 11, GxP, GDPR, and other regulations impacting AI use in healthcare and biotechnology.

  • Ability to incorporate threat intelligence into AI risk assessments and apply it to proactive model defensive engineering.

  • Familiarity with tools like SHAP, LIME, IBM AI Fairness 360, and Google’s What-If Tool to address AI model transparency and bias.
